ISSUES WITH MASKS THAT RESULT IN Toronto NECK PAIN AND HEADACHE

Masks and mask-wearing have down sides. One study of nurses explained that headache affected 73.4%, extreme sweating impacted 59.6%, breathing difficulty disturbed 36.7%. Goggle or glasses’ fogging was reported by 91.7%. N95 wearers stated issues with nasal bridge scarring in 76.6% and pain and indentation of the back of the ears by 66.4%. (1) Another study of nurses who had to wear masks and other PPE for more than 4 hours at a time discovered that vision problems affected 47.9% of them as did redness of cheeks/nose bridge/ears, dry mouth, and headaches. (2) One study of healthcare workers focused on the incidence of headache throughout COVID-19. 81% said that they developed new PPE (mask/eye wear)-linked headaches. 33% of them stated they were experiencing headaches before COVID. 91.3% of those pre-existing headache sufferers said that increased mask/eye wear equipment impacted their headache control and work. (3) Overall headache occurrence due to PPE (mask/eye) was 62% in another report. Working more than 8 hours at a time escalated the risk of new headache occurrence. Discomfort, blurred vision, and reduced concentration were other reported issues. Wearing such equipment worsened pre-existing headache issues and triggered new headache experiences. NEW PAIN ISSUES AND HELP WITH CHIROPRACTIC

According to the American Chiropractic Association, our Toronto chiropractic patients are not alone! Chiropractic patients across the country are reporting some new pain issues with their neck, shoulders, and upper back during this past year of the pandemic, particularly those who wear masks for long hours. Certainly, stress is a contributor to pain in normal times. In these times, it’s no wonder that patients are describing more pain. Masks may well add to pain in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Masks may affect vision. If a mask lies too high, the wearer may tuck the chin to see better or hold the neck in an awkward way to see more clearly. A better fitting mask may be beneficial. More frequent breaks may be of benefit. Stretching more often may help. A walk to de-stress is a terrific option! (5) Your Toronto chiropractor understands these issues and is ready to help!
