Thoughts
of the Mediterranean bring postcard-worthy images of gorgeous
blue ocean waters, sandy beaches, clear blue
skies…and food? Yes, food! Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre shares nutrition tips,
and the Mediterranean diet is talked up around the nutrition world for its multiple health advantages
as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are
good for all of us in our Toronto
chiropractic family!
BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the expanding recognition that diet plays
a beneficial role in health and prevention of disease issues
like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being established.
A recent paper with suggestions for guidelines recommended
a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver
calcium and protein adequate enough to maintain
normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are linked to a decreased risk of fracture. (1) In other studies,
the Mediterranean diet has been described as reducing hip fracture
risk. Another recent paper states that there is indication
that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary
Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also reduce hip
fracture risk as well as threat of lumbar spine
osteoporosis in females. (2) A study just published this
past month showed that older adults who adhered
the Meditterranean Diet closely had reduced odds
of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, lower
osteoporosis odds, reduced probability of
cognitive decline and hip fracture may be motivating to check
out and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre finds these new
studies quite interesting to share with our
Toronto chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
What foods are in the mediterranean diet? Fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt,
seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water,
juices. It suggests staying away from sugars,
refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
