Drink your way to health? When the chosen drink is tea, it’s quite possible! Aging-related
skeletal pain responds well
to muscle and joint boosters like those in green tea. Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre offers
nutritional advice like drinking green tea to our Toronto
chiropractic patients.
AGING-RELATED SKELETAL, CARTILAGE, AND JOINT DISEASES
Skeletal
risks like disc height loss and changes like the two joint and muscle diseases
called osteoarthritis and sarcopenia come with aging. A recent
study described the interaction of height loss and vertebral
fractures in postmenopausal women. The researchers concluded
that age rather than the height loss was suggested to be the superior
method of determining risk of vertebral fracture. (1) Spinal osteoarthritis was associated with
stature loss in postmenopausal women, a situation documented
to reduce quality of life. (2) Cartilage is the victim
of these
diseases’ inflammatory and degenerative processes. Sarcopenia’s loss of strength and
muscle mass necessitates attention to quantity and quality
of skeletal muscle mass which is where where green tea comes
into play. Green tea has catechins that foster
healthy joints and skeletal muscle by reducing inflammatory
mediators. (3) Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre believes you may enjoy
some beneficial green tea!
NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS
Green tea is available in many
types. An additional recent article reports
that knee osteoarthritis patients benefitted from a mixture
of curcuminoids, collagen and green tea extract which exhibited
anti-inflammatory properties.
The researchers wrote that natural ingredients provide
a rational role in the management of osteoarthritis. (4) Another
natural option: spearmint tea! A report of how spearmint teas affected
knee osteoarthritis found that a commercial spearmint tea improved
stiffness and physical disability while a spearmint tea brewed from a high-rosmarinic
acid (high-rosA) variety significantly reduced pain. (5) Rosmarinic
acid is extracted from the woody, perennial herb, rosemary. it’s a polyphenolic compound with antioxidant properties. Polyphenols are written to be
anti-cancer, anti-tumor cell proliferation, anti-apoptosis (cell death),
anti-metastasis, and anti-inflammatory. Rosmarinic acid is found in plant
species like the mint. (6) Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre is on the hunt for
some high-rosA spearmint tea to enhance the Toronto chiropractic
treatment plan.
